The Shaw “Spank” Redemption
By William Trillo
It was redemption time
for promoter Gary Shaw as IBF bantamweight Champ Joseph
Agbeko (27-1,22 KO’s) was unceremoniously dethroned by #
1 challenger Yonnhy Perez (19-0,14 KO’s) in a 12 round
battle at the Las Vegas Treasure Island resort . Judges
scored the fight 117-110, 117-110, 116-111, all in favor
of the new Champ Perez. This had to taste extra sweet
for Shaw who saw his fighter Vic Darchinyan lose earlier
in the year to the same Agbeko.
The icing on the cake
for Shaw came in the semi- main event as lightweight
Antonio DeMarco (22-1-1,10 KO’s) TKO’d Jose Alfaro
(23-4, 20 KO’s) in the 10th round. DeMarco appeared to
be hurt early but weathered the storm and came back and
dropped Alfaro 3 times before referee Joe Cortez stopped
the fight at the 2:07 mark. With the win Demarco takes
the interim WBC lightweight title.
