Kaizer Mabuza won by TKO
over Kendall Holt in an IBF Light Welterweight Title
eliminator fight. Mabuza was trying to be the aggressor
early in the fight, but Holt did not seem to be allowing
it. Holt was landing the cleaner body shots in the first
round. The second round seemed to belong to Holt too.
Holt was fighting a counter-punchers fight. Mabuza was
throwing a lot, but he was not able to land them. And
Mabuza was showing frustration at Holt’s movement.
Mabuza, however, was
still determined to win this fight. He turned the tide
of the fight in the third round. Mabuza almost knocked
down Holt early in the round. Holt would have gone down
if not for leaning on Mabuza. This seemed to give
confidence to Mabuza. He became the aggressor,
controlling the round. He kept Holt on the ropes for
most of the round.
Holt, sensing the
situation, became more aggressive in the fourth round.
He threw the first punch, and as long as he kept off the
ropes, he was looking good. But whenever Mabuza could
get Holt on the ropes, he was able to land good, hard
shots. Mabuza also landed a shot to the nose of Holt,
causing blood to flow. This could have been the shot to
turn the fight, making it difficult for Holt to breathe.
The next two rounds
belonged to Mabuza. He was chasing Holt down in the
fifth. He again caught Holt on the ropes. Holt looked to
be in trouble, hardly throwing a punch, and what he did
manage to throw lacked power. Holt might have gotten of
the first punch in the sixth round, but he quickly found
himself in trouble again. He spent most of the round
backing up around the ring. Mabuza was landing punches
while chasing Holt down. He never let up the pressure.
Referee Lindsey Page stopped the fight after the sixth
round.
The second fight of the evening was between light
heavyweights Anthony Pietrantonio and Ariel Espinal. The
fight started with Pietrantonio using his height
advantage against Espinal. He made it difficult for
Espinal to get inside. In the second round, Espinal
would throw himself at Pietrantonio just to get inside
to land some punches. The third round started out
looking to be much more of the same; however, Espinal
was able to knock Pietrantonio down. Pietrantonio
returned the favor, knocking Espinal to the mat with
what seemed to be no more than a wild punch. Espinal cut
the right eye of Pietrantonio and kept up the pressure
until the end of the round. By the beginning of the
fourth round, Pietrantonio was looking tired. He was
throwing wide hooks that lacked any power. Espinal was
able to get inside and starting landing combinations.
Referee Benjy Estevez stopped the fight at 1:38 in the
fourth round. Espinal won by TKO.
Super Middleweight Todd Eriksson failed to get his first
win in a fight against Troy Maxwell. Eriksson had speed
but little style. He seemed to fight off of nervous
energy. Maxwell stayed calm throughout the fight. He was
landing the harder shots. Although Maxwell at times
seemed to have trouble with Eriksson’s height, he just
kept working at the body of Eriksson. In the second
round, Maxwell caught Eriksson on the ropes. Eriksson
was slowing down by the third round. Maxwell was landing
more, and he was backing Eriksson around the ring.
Maxwell clearly controlled round four. By the end of the
fight, both were covered in blood. Maxwell won the
unanimous decision.
Although Jamaal Davis put up a good fight against Ossie
Duran, Duran’s experience seemed to get the better of
Davis. Davis came out in the first round as the
aggressor, giving Duran little opportunity. Duran was
able to come back late in the round. This seemed to be
enough for the judges to give him the round. Davis
started to let up the pressure in the second round, and
Duran was able to take control of the round.. Once
again, Davis came out as the aggressor in the third
round. But Duran landed a hard punch to the head of
Davis, knocking his backward. Davis was fighting
cautious now. Duran was now clearly in control, landing
hard shots to his head. The fourth round was more of an
all out brawl. But the more Davis got hit, the more he
kept his distance. All three judges scored the fight
40-36 for Duran.
In what was the shortest fight of the night, Glen Tapia
won the TKO victory over Tyrone Miles in 1:00.
