Chambers Must Now Be Taken Seriously After Complete Dismantling
Of Unbeaten Dimitrenko |
|
Eddie Chambers (now 35-1, 18 KO's) went to
Germany in the best shape of his career and put on his best
performance to date over previously undefeated Alexander
Dimitrenko. Although the fight ended with a Majority Decision
win for Chambers, it was a completely one sided fight with two
knockdowns and only three possible rounds Dimitrenko could have
won, so how judge Paul Thomas saw it as a draw is beyond a
mystery.
From the opening round, Chambers not only looked the part, but
played the part as America's number one heavyweight. Chambers
was faster, and chased the 6' 7'' giant the entire fight. It was
clear after 3 one sided rounds that Chamber's had no fear of
Dimitrenko's punch, taking his biggest right hand and then
shrugging, before continuing to move forward. Chambers unleashed
quick jabs, hooks to the body and head, and uppercuts that
snapped Dimitrenko's head back.
In round 7, a left hook to the kidney prompted Dimitrenko to
turn his back and complain, but the referee ruled it a legal
blow and started a standing eight count.
In round 10, a perfect left hook on the chin sent Dimitrenkos'
mouth piece flying, and his legs buckling to the canvas for the
second ruled knockdown of the fight.
In round 12, Chambers battered Dimitrenko from rope to rope who
was out on his feet, but made the final bell.
Final scores were 113-113 (what fight was he watching?), 117-109
(3 rounds to Dimitrenko as how we saw it), and 116-111 (4 rounds
to Dimitrenko).
Dimitrenko takes his first loss at 29-1, with 19 KO's.
With the win, Chambers becomes the WBO number 1 mandatory to
Wladimir Klitschko.

By William Trillo
Look's like all that ribbing of Eddie
Chambers has finally done some good because "Fast" Eddie
came in at a career low of 208.3 pounds as he prepares
for a huge (take term literally) test against Alexander
Dimitrenko (253.5 pounds) in Germany today in a WBO
Eliminator.
After ballooning up to 223 pounds for his last fight
against Sam Peter, Chambers was chastised more for his
Son of Flubber physique than he was praised for his
unanimous decision victory. And rightly so.

Now fully at the height of his powers, Nottingham's Booth was in

man simply had no answer for.
On defense, Booth, 33-5 (13), presented a impenetrable wall of
angles, footwork and stinging counters that nullified nearly
everything that the veteran Dean, 14-11-2 (4), threw.

Arguello Has Always Been On My

By William Trillo
Photos By William Trillo & Marlene Marquez
As the great Alexis Arguello passed this
week there have been countless stories about the fine
boxer and great man, and rightly so. If any fighter
truly epitomized what class in boxing is all about it
was Arguello.
As an avid collector of fight posters and memorabilia
one of my collections is fight posters that date from
now to back further than I care to mention. With that
said, I have most of my posters in storage and some
hanging in the garage. And then there are the only two
that I have framed and hanging in my house.

Oscar De La Hoya Mourns The Loss
Of Alexis Arguello "El Flaco Explosivo" |

Six-time world champion Oscar de la Hoya mourns

Arguello. The three-division former world champion and boxing
icon was found dead Wednesday morning in his hometown of

the man many considered to be a gentleman both in and out of the
ring.
De La Hoya commented, "I felt sad receiving the news and still
find it hard to believe. Alexis [Arguello] was my idol. When I
was young, I heard so much about him and his fights and loved
his style in the ring. In my opinion he was of the biggest and

Sobral Prepares For Mousasi |
|
Gegard Mousasi has declared his fight against
Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, Renato “Babalu” Sobral
an all-out war. “Sobral is so tough. When he comes, he comes to
fight,” says Mousasi, as he trains for one of the biggest
challenges of his career. Babalu Sobral ranks in the top ten of
light heavyweights and has been training since Mousasi was a
newborn. Besides the ten years difference in age and experience,
Mousasi will have to contend with Sobral’s explosiveness and
dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills in the ring.

O'Connor Moves To 7-0 |
|
You could say it was lucky number seven for hot
junior welterweight prospect Danny O’Connor Saturday night at
The Roxy in Boston, Massachusetts, but when you win by shutout
scores of 60-54 on all three judges’ cards, there’s no luck
involved.
The victory, O’Connor’s seventh in seven pro fights, was his
first six round test against 31 fight veteran Sebastien Hamel,
and the Framingham, Massachusetts native passed with flying
colors in front of scores of local fans who cheered on the 2008

By William Trillo

After his loss to Marcos Maidana on
Saturday night Victor Ortiz told Max Kellerman in front
of the Staple Center crowd and an HBO BAD audience, "I'm
young, but I don't think I deserve to get beat up like
this. So I have a lot of thinking to do."
Inevitably his thinking will turn to the weight of being
labeled as "Next Golden Boy" and whether or not he can
handle the pressure of filling those shoes.

"Latin Fury 9" Demonstrates What
Professional Boxing Is All About |
|
By Tim Donaldson
Photos: Chris Farina – Top Rank
Professional boxing is more than a sport
in which the participants simply want to win. Unlike
amateur boxers who just want to outscore their opponents
to move on to the next fight, professional boxers need
to do more. Professional boxing is about electrifying
the crowd and bringing the fans into your corner.
Without the fans, you have no fight.
Juan Manuel Lopez, better known as Juanma, and Olivier
Lontchi proved that on Saturday night at Latin Fury 9.
Boardwalk Hall was not sold out for this fight, but you
would not have known that by the noise level when the
main event was about to get under way. Maybe it was not
as loud as the Cotto, Clottey fight, but my ears rang
for just as long. This was a crowd that backed their
fighters. And both sides were vocal. Juanma may have had
more fans in attendance, but Lontchi fans were just as
loud.

"Latin Fury 9" Undercard Results |
|
By Tim Donaldson
The fight card for Latin Fury 9 was packed, featuring a total of
ten fights for the evening. Six of these fights were not carried
on the pay-per-view telecast, at least not live, and for the
most part, it seems like there was good reason to not carry
them. Five of the six fights were extremely one-sided, and
although that might seem bad, some of these fighters do show
promise.
A good example would be the fight between Matt Korobov and
Benjamin Diaz. I was surprised to see that Korobov took a fight
so quickly after his last fight, June 13 on the Cotto undercard,
but if that was short notice, he didn’t seem to be affected by
it. Korobov knocked down Diaz twice in the first round. The
first was so quick I wasn’t sure if Diaz had slipped or was hit.
But Korobov wasted no time in finishing off Diaz, catching him
in the corner and dropping him again with a left hook to the
body. The fight was over after only one minute and twenty-two
seconds. And it goes without saying that Korobov’s career is on
the fast track to the big fights.

In an early candidate for fight of the
year, Marcos Maidana defeated Victor Ortiz by TKO to win
the WBA interim super lightweight title. On the canvas
three times in the first two rounds of the fight,
Maidana bloodied and bruised Ortiz and ultimately forced
referee Raul Caiz Sr. to call a halt to the action at 46
seconds of the 6th round. “I didn’t listen to my
corner”, said Ortiz following the fight. “I just didn’t
execute. I just stood in there and brawled with him.”

Maidana & Pressure Too Much For Ortiz
“Chino” Outlasts “Vicious” In 5 Knockdown War |
|
By William Trillo
After his KO loss to Marcos Maidana (26-1,25 KO’s), Victor Ortiz
(24-2-1, 19 KOs) admitted the pressure of fighting in front of
his hometown was tough to handle. No doubt the undue weight of
being tabbed "The Next Golden Boy" was there as well. And let’s
not forget a hard hitting Argentinean who took everything Ortiz
had to offer and then dished out a chin full of right hands that
had Ortiz busted up and swollen by the time the bout was stopped
at the 46 second mark of round six.

Juanma Stops Lontchi After 9 |
|
|
Photo: Chris Farina - Top Rank
Juan Manuel Lopez (now 26-0, 24 KO's)
retained the WBO Jr. Featherweight Title with a stoppage
over Oliver Lontchi when his corner asked the fight be
stopped after the 9th, between rounds. The fight was not
all Juanma however, as Lonctchi provided a pesky style
that made him hard to catch as he would hold or duck out
of the way and use the ropes to maneuver.
In round 2, a quick right to the head sent Lontchi down
for the first time in the fight. It looked as if this
fight was going to end quick as Lontchi didn't offer
much but holding and trying to keep away.
In round 5, Lontchi found a way to sneak a big right
hand in that stopped Juanma in his tracks. Two more
right hands would follow as Juanma began to get a bit
frustrated, jumping in with big shots, and missing while
loading up.
In round 7, Juanma staggered Lontchi to the ropes with a
right hand. Juanma began to unload, but Lontchi hung in
there and was fighting back.
In round 9, a sharp left to the head sent Lontchi down
for the second time. This time he was on shaky legs, but
made it out of the round. Trainer Howard Grant asked his
fighter if he could go "one more round", but the depress
and unmotivated look on Lontchi's face told him enough
as he asked the fight be called off.
Lontchi falls to 18-1-2 with 8 KO's.

Arce Stops Lumacad In 3 With One Punch |
|
|
Photo: Chris Farina - Top Rank
Jorge Arce (now 52-5-1, 40 KO's) landed a
one-punch knockout over Fernando Lumacad who decided to
take the full 10 count in round 3. This was Arce's first
fight with trainer Nacho Beristain and it showed as he
remained a little more composed than usual in the
opening round. In round 2, a jab from Lumacad opened up
a small cut under the right eye of Arce. In round 3, a
counter right hand over Lumacad's jab sent him straight
down to his knee's. Lumacad turned over and sat down on
his own so he appeared to be fine, but decided to rise
on the count of 10 which was too late and the fight was
waived off at :35 of the 3rd round. Lumacad falls to
19-2-2 with 7 KO's.

Forman vs. Bundrage Declared No Decision After Headbutt
Yuri Foreman, one of the worlds most boring
fighters, continues to squeak away without a loss on his record
as an accidental headbutt against Cornelius Bundrage in round 3
caused a cut over the his right eye. Unwilling to fight on, the
fight was declared a no decision. They claimed they could "not
stop the bleeding" however close ups clearly showed the cut was
not bleeding.
Miguel Cotto suffered an accidental headbutt in the same exact
round in his last fight against Joshua Clottey and that cut in
fact was on that did not stop pouring for the remainder of the
fight. Cotto fought on. Cotto won. Yuri Foreman is not that kind
of fighter however.
Martirosyan Stops Tsurkan After 6
Vanes Martirosyan (now 25-0, 16 KO's) gave his best performance
to date with a completely dominant performance against the
always tough Andrey Tsurkan. Vanes snapped out quick jabs and
right hands that staggered Tsurkan often and never allowed him
to get in the fight whatsoever. The doctor asked referee Steve
Smoger to call it off after the 6th round.

|
Arthur Abraham (now 30-0, 24 KO's) retained the
IBF Middleweight Title by stopping tough and game Mahir Oral in
the 10th after a total of five knockdowns along the way.
From the opening round, it was clear Oral came to fight and to
try and take the title from the reigning champion. Oral came out
with a high pace, throwing to the body early, but unable to get
through Abraham tight guard to the head. Abraham was just
waiting to open up, but doing very little which allowed Oral to
rack up some early points, winning the first 3 rounds.

Rich Marotta Spoils HBO Results (Ortiz vs. Maidana)
On PPV Card (Juanma vs. Lontchi) With No Warning |
|
Viewers of the
"Latin Fury 9" PPV card that featured Juan Manuel
Lopez vs. Oliver Lontchi may have been a tad bit upset after
hearing a non-warning spoiler result of the HBO card going on in
California during round 3 of the main event in New Jersey.
Commentator Rich Marotta, with no warning, blurted out "Ortiz
got knocked out", completely spoiling the result for those
viewers who were waiting patiently until 10pm PT to watch the
fight on HBO. Maybe Marotta forgot, but it was only 8pm when
their main event went underway and perfect for west coast
viewers who could just turn on HBO after the PPV card was over
to watch it as if it was live. However, without a spoiler
warning, those viewers now have a sour taste in their mouth
because they wont get to experience the shocking upset during
the delayed telecast.
Thanks a lot Rich, that was a good one! Next time, a simple "put
your hands over your ears if you don't want to know the result"
would suffice.
