Huck & Povetkin Eager To Extend Winning Streaks |
|
WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck,
American challenger Adam Richards, IBF mandatory challenger
Alexander Povetkin as well as cruiserweight hopeful Alexander
Frenkel and IBF Intercontinental Cruiserweight Champion Yoan
Pablo Hernandez all participated in a public work-out today in
Berlin´s famous Axel-Springer-Passage. All fighters will be in
action on Saturday night when Captain Huck makes a second
defence of his WBO title. His opponent presented himself in
strong shape on Tuesday afternoon despite a horror trip from
Houston, which had left him stranded in Amsterdam after missing
his connecting flight. After a long wait, Richards (23-2, 15
KOs) made it to Berlin and eventually to his downtown hotel on
late Monday night. “Everything is fine now,” he said. “It was a
long journey but I am here and that is all that matters. I will
be ready for Huck. It will be an exciting fight with two bulls
going forward all the time.”

It was only after my Guardian Angel warning me that I have been
away too long that I realized it had been a while since I chimed
in with my thoughts. It's not that I have been loafing mind you,
it's been a tad busy here in So Cal and what with 2 major press
conferences and some hot local fights....geez....
excuses excuses...which reminds me....
Speaking of Floyd Mayweather, I am glad he was amused when the
Tecate Girl at the Southern California press conference passed
out and hit her head on the stage. That laughing while she was
down was about as classless an act as I have seen in quite some
time....nice work Pretty Boy!

Darchinyan Wins While Guerrero Wows At The Show |
|
Report & Photos By Roy & Marlene Marquez
WBC &WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan doled out a
twelve round beating to Mexican challenger Rodrigo Guerrero in a
thoroughly captivating one-sided fight. The scorecards read
118-110, 117-111 & 120-108 but didn’t begin to tell the drama
that unfolded in the ring. The fight took place at The Show at
Agua Caliente Casino Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, CA and was
shown on SHOBOX: The New Generation.
“I am not happy to lose but I feel really good”, said Guerrero
through an interpreter following the fight. “I think people now
know who I am and that I didn’t come here to lose or just to lie
down.” Guerrero may have lost the fight but he certainly won the
crowd and the respect of the champion. “He took all my punches
and kept fighting back”, explained Darchinyan. “If I didn’t
train hard or if I took this guy lightly this is a much harder
fight and maybe I lose.”

Shamone Alvarez Knocks Out Alexis Camacho
And Other Results From Star Boxing
At The Tropicana in Atlantic City |
|
By Tim Donaldson
Shamone Alvarez was able to do what he could not do against
Delvin Rodriquez and Joshua Clottey. Shamone Alvarez was able to
look like a true contender with a future in the Welterweight
division. Maybe the pressure was off. There were no television
cameras for this fight. Or maybe the pressure was on for Alvarez
to prove himself once again in the ring. No fighter wants to
fade into obscurity. Whatever the reason, Alvarez gave the fans
the fight they wanted to see and the critics the fight that will
force them to take another look.

My "Pacquiao Time" Day At Wild Card |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
A week ago I did an interview with Steve Forbes at Wild Card
Boxing Club. At the time I wrote that up, I mentioned how lucky
I felt to be able to not only do my interview face to face, but
to watch Steve spar with Manny Pacquiao, and then get to stay
the rest of the afternoon to watch the remainder of Manny’s
training.
Now, after looking at the pictures taken at Media Day, I am
really just as excited when I think about the events that took
place on the day I went, as I was right after I left. So I
decided to write up a little story on my impressions of the
goings on, more from a fan point of view than that of a
journalist.

Alexander vs. Urango Post Fight Quotes |
|
Devon Alexander: “My coach told me to stay
focused when Urango started bleeding [from the nose in the third
round]. My coach said, ‘Don’t stand there and get hit.’
“I can beat anyone: Zab, Timothy Bradley, you name it. I want to
come back to St. Louis and sell out the Scottrade center. I’m
coming back to good old St. Lou with two world titles. This is
very sweet.”
Juan Urango: “I’m very happy and satisfied with my
performance tonight. Devon is a great champion and he came out
and did his job. I performed well but Devon won tonight.”

Alexander Scores Impressive KO Over Urango,
Unifying WBC & IBF Super Lightweight Titles |
|
Devon Alexander (now 20-0, 13 KO's) unified the
WBC and IBF Super Lightweight Titles with an 8th round stoppage
over tough Juan Urango. Alexander started fast, popping out
quick jabs and right hands, keeping his distance, but still
engaging. Urango was hunting for big shots, turning the tide
slightly in round 6, catching Alexander more than a few times.
Alexander remained calm and took control back, landing a
monster, right uppercut, counter that lifted Urango's head
almost a foot before he fell to the canvas. Urango would rise to
weak legs as a straight right put Urango down again almost
instantly. Urango rose again, but was not steady enough to
continue. Final time was 1:12 of the 8th. Urango falls to 22-3-1
with 17 KO's.

Honorio Beats Hilario To Keep
NABO Lightweight Championship |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
What a night of boxing we were treated to at Pechanga Resort and
Casino in Temecula, California by Goossen Tutor Productions. As
usual, everyone was very hospitable, but the fights on this
night were particularly exciting.
After Leonard Tucker sang a great rendition of our National
Anthem, we were ready to go. Well, almost, as Joe Tessitore was
putting on some more makeup while sitting at the announce table,
but I’ll leave that for another day.
The main event found the NABO Lightweight Champion Martin
Honorio (28-4-1, 14 KO’s) defending his title against Wilton
Hilario (12-1-1, 9 KO’s). This had to be one of the most ugly
fights one could see, but also one of the most impressive so far
as grit and determination are concerned. The fight got emotional
almost from the start when, in the second round, Hilario got in
a hit or two after the referee told them to break, causing
Honorio to answer back…and if looks could kill. In the third,
Wilton hit Martin behind the head, creating a bit more tension
between the two. At this point, Hilario did not have too many
fans in the building.

Povetkin Warms Up For Klitschko
With Fight Against Mora On March 13 |
|
Unbeaten heavyweight contender and IBF mandatory
challenger Alexander Povetkin (18-0, 13 KOs) will take on Javier
Mora in Berlin on March 13. The 2004 Olympic gold medal winner
will make his second fight under the guidance of star coach
Teddy Atlas. In December, the 30-year-old Russian became the
first man to knock out Leo Nolan, clinching a third-round KO
victory in Ludwigsburg. To warm up for the hotly-anticipated
showdown against Wladimir Klitschko, Povetkin needs to take care
of business against Mora (22-3, 18 KOs) on the Huck-Richards
card. “Everything can happen in heavyweight boxing, so I really
need to be on alert,” Povetkin said. “I will of course be
entering the fight as the favourite since I had a very good
amateur career and I am currently the IBF´s number one. I will
win this fight and show everybody that I am ready for
Klitschko.”

“ShamRock’d” Press Conference Quotes |
|
Jimmy Burchfield (CES, President): “This
is going to be a great show, a few days before St. Patrick’s Day
(Irish), and the night of St. Joseph’s Day (Italian). In boxing,
though, we’re all one ethnic group. At this show we’ll have
Vinny Paz representing the Italians, Micky Ward the Irish.”
Micky Ward: “It’s going to be a great show. Jimmy always
puts on a great card with competitive fights. That’s what fans
want to see. I’m training a couple of guys fighting (Joey
McCreedy and Sean Eklund). I’m not going to tell you they’re
both going to win. They’re both ready and will give it their
best -- may the best man win.”
Vinny Paz: “I love Micky Ward. He ducked me. (“You were too
light,” Ward said.) He’s a great guy and warrior. Jimmy
Burchfield is my man.”
